Assistant Director of Webb University Center
Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Webb
University Center. ODU is a state-funded Carnegie/doctoral research institution enrolling 18,965
undergraduates and 5,501 graduates. It is located in Norfolk, one of the cities making up the Hampton
Roads region of Southeastern Virginia.
Webb University Center’s 186,000 square foot facility hosts over 8,300 events each year, attended by
over 300,000 guests. On any given week during the academic year, the Center has over 70,000 visitors.
This vibrant Center is located in the geographic heart of campus and houses over a dozen administrative
offices from Student Engagement and Enrollment Services and Auxiliary Services, over 17,000 square
feet of multi-purpose meeting space, retail and residential dining, KC’s Lion’s Den (game room), student
organization offices along with other retail and service functions. Management for the center is split
between Auxiliary Services for all building service and operational concerns and the Dean of Students
Office for programmatic and scheduling concerns.
The Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Center’s facilities and
events. The primary duty of the position is supervision of building operations, housekeeping, and
meeting services. This position supervises the maintenance coordinator and three full-time staff, the
housekeeping supervisor and 24 full-time staff, and the night/weekend manager. The position assists
the Director in developing short- and long-term goals for Webb Center.
A Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Management, Business Administration, Student
Affairs or related field is required. The successful candidate must have full-time experience in student
center operations or programming and experience supervising a staff that includes both entry- and midlevel positions. Additional qualifications include: knowledge of management of a large facility, excellent
verbal and written communication skills (including public presentations), excellent organizational skills,
mediation skills, the ability to prepare complex financial statements and reports, and the ability to meet
assigned objectives and goals within a specified time frame. The assistant director must be able to
function independently and professionally in the assigned areas. The ideal candidate must have a
thorough understanding of the complex operations and structure of a university, knowledge of fiscal
accounting and personnel management. The institution prefers a candidate with building operations
experience and demonstrated experience managing complex projects that involve a wide variety of
constituents.
The University recently updated the master plan which included an examination of the Webb University
Center and surrounding precinct. As a result, a request for capital authority was submitted to fund a
major capital project that will likely begin in the next three to five years. If approved, the Assistant
Director will be integral to the planning and implementation of this project.
Salary range: $55,000 to $65,000 commensurate with experience
Anticipated start date: January 1, 2014.
