Things to Consider
We would advise you to consider implications of your withdrawal. In doing this it is strongly recommended that you
make contact with the following sources of advice which may affect your decision to withdraw from your course.
We have provided you with a "tick box" next to the sources of advice, so you can manage who you have successfully
contacted and received guidance from regarding your withdrawal.
Faculty level
(please tick once contacted)
Academic staff in your course team, for example your Course Leader in your Faculty or your Student Support Officer.
Please check the Virtual Helpdesk section on shuspace to find their contact details or contact them through your Faculty
Helpdesk.
University level
(please tick once contacted)
Student Advice and Information Team in Student & Learning Services - This team can help you explore other courses
within or outside of SHU.
The team can be contacted by phone on 0114 225 3813 (City Campus) or 0114 225 2491 (Collegiate Crescent Campus)
or by email guidance@shu.ac.uk
Accommodation Contract
(please tick once contacted)
What would be the effects for any accommodation contract? It is possible that you would have to pay for the year's
accommodation. Withdrawal from your course does not release you from any accommodation contract. You should
contact Accommodation Services or your Landlord to discuss your situation.
Independent advice can be sought from the Hallam Union Advice Centre. The team can be contacted by phone on 0114
225 4148, email advicecentre@shu.ac.uk or visit their Advice Centre.
A Citizen's Advice Bureau or local Advice Centre may also be able to offer some guidance to you.
Tuition Fees
(please tick once contacted)
From the University’s perspective a student who withdraws from their studies early is charged a pro-rata tuition
fee. We would urge you to seek guidance from the University's Finance Team and Student Finance England regarding
the potential costs you will incur by withdrawing.
Please note that should Student Finance England (SFE) not pay fees on your behalf, you will be invoiced for any fees
outstanding as of your withdrawal date. Arrangements to pay outstanding fees can normally be made via Sheffield
Hallam University's student finance.
NHS Bursaries
(please tick once contacted)
If you withdraw from your course at any point, you must let the NHS helpline know by calling 0300 330 1345 and also let
the university know immediately to avoid the risk of overpayments being made to you that will then have to be repaid.
Student Finance England (SFE)
(please tick once contacted)
Student Finance must always be contacted to discuss your individual circumstances.
You can find current contact details for Student Finance England via their website:
https://www.gov.uk/contact-student-finance-england
Future Study and Funding
(please tick once contacted)
You may also want to explore with Student Finance England how any future funding (tuition fee/maintenance loan) is
affected by your withdrawal if you decide to take up another course in the future.
You will need to ask how/when you would be required to pay money back to Student Finance England following any
early withdrawal from the course.
Please also bear in mind that if you decide to come back to study at SHU after permanently withdrawing, you will need
to reapply as a brand new student.
International Students
(please tick once contacted)
There are also immigration rules which apply and students should contact International Students Support for guidance.
Please note that the University is legally obliged to report all periods of absence including withdrawal from the
University, to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
Next Steps
If you decide that permanent withdrawal is the right decision for you, please sign the declaration below and book an
appointment with your Student Support Officer.
They will guide you through the rest of the withdrawal process and provide you with the forms you will need to
complete to finalise leaving the University.
Please note that until you have met with your Student Support Officer and submitted a withdrawal form, you will be
deemed to be still attending your course and charged fees accordingly.
Once the forms are completed, they will be used to update your records and the relevant information will be provided
to Student Finance England. You will also receive a letter confirming your withdrawal from the University.
