2014 TIVA Midwinter Session Descriptions
New Teacher Workshop / $75.00
Requires an additional registration and includes binder and some refreshments.
Anyone attending these sessions MUST register and pay to be issued a work book and served
food and beverages.
CPR Workshop and Training / $75.00
Pre-Registration required, only 18 seats available
 Basic First Responder First Aid
This session is designed to cover the procedures involved in a rescue where the victim
is still breathing on his own. It covers Heart Attack, Stroke, Shock, and choking, bleeding
and other emergencies.

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
This session will teach cover CPR Instruction to a victim who is NOT breathing and may
have no pulse. This session includes a film on CPR techniques and personalized
mannequin practice. Certificates of completion will be issued upon successfully passing
a practical mannequin test and a written test.

Documentation
Upon successful completion of the class, certificates will be issued to each individual
attendee. Copies of these certificates will be suitable for filing in individual’s personnel
files.
Occupational Group Meetings
All teachers are encouraged to attend these meetings where the teachers there will discuss
education and certification needs for them and their students, along with student competitions in
the appropriate areas.
District Meetings
These meetings are conducted by the SkillsUSA and TIVA leadership of the TIVA-Skills
districts. Your district number should be on your name badge.
During the meetings, district and state contests will be discussed and planning for teacher and
student activities. TIVA will hold elections for their respective district board member.
TIVA Breakfast Meeting
During this complimentary breakfast meeting, the TIVA Board of Directors and Executive
Director, Linda Holcombe, will bring you up-to-date on TIVA activities. TIVA’s attorney will talk
to you about trending legal issues that he is seeing for teachers and how you can avoid making
some similar mistakes that could cost you your job and career as an educator.

9-1-1 Professional Pride Inc. is a company offering training, management products and
services to the Emergency Communications industry. Our products and services were created
by 9-1-1 professionals who have been there, done that in Communications Centers, and college

This session is designed for SkillsUSA news and updates regarding contests and projects for
Electronics, Engineering, Information Technology and STEM. We will share contest information
as well as project information and updates. This will also be the time to discuss changes in
standards and project grading rubrics. Also, Information about district, state and national Skills
will be discussed.
Toyota Training - TBD
Drug Cartels Utilizing School Age Children for Illegal Activities
DPS Agent Joe Sanchez will talk about some of the knowledge he has gained while working
with DPS and drug cartels in a border area and what they do to recruit and work with school age
children to further their Cartel illegal activities. You can learn much from these experiences to be
aware of what is going on with some of your students.
Chief Architect / Home Design 3D Software
With Chief Architect, Learn how instructors are effectively enhancing CTE curriculum in many
areas, including: Drafting, Building & Construction Trades, Interior Design, Restaurant Design,
Landscaping, Deck, Cabinetry and Criminal Justice.
You will leave the session with trial software and curriculum ideas ready to implement. You will
also learn of the certification opportunities available.
Welding Workshop / $100.00
This workshop will consist of more basic welding technology, and we will teach the following
topics:
Friday: Part C of the AWS CWI Exam: The study of the API 1104 Welding Code
Saturday: Part B of the AWS CWI Exam: The practical use of welding inspection tools to inspect
welds.
Smartphone Apps for the Automotive Classroom
This session will provide an overview of many Smartphone and Tablet Apps that automotive
and transportation personnel use to enhance instruction. If you have a favorite, share it during
this collaborative session.
Alcohol by Volume
TABC has research, documentation and items to help you with your students and to teach them
about alcohol awareness for themselves and their peers.
Attending ARD Meetings: Solving the Mystery
An increasing number of students with disabilities are being enrolled into CTE and this presents
unique challenges. In order to ensure a safe and successful learning environment for all,
instructors need to advocate effectively for both students and our curriculum at ARD’s. This
presentation will help you do just that.
Autodesk, Inventor, Revit Instructor Certification Prep Class / $100.00
Must pre-register and select the book you will need, class fee covers this cost.
During this session you will cover the materials needed to study for the examination of your
choice, Autodesk, Inventor or Revit. The instructor will outline an action plan and will be
available to you between the January and July conferences. In July we will have a re-cap
training followed by examination (included in cost of class).

teaching to this generation requires specific tools and techniques. In this fun and meaningful
session, you will discover strategies, programs, etc., and engage in hands-on activities. Please

CareerSafe-On-Line
The goal is to enhance all educators’ knowledge of workplace and classroom safety. The
program achieves this not only by providing youth-focused, interactive training to students, but
also by providing teachers with the resources and tools they need to facilitate effective
integration of the training resources into the secondary and post-secondary curricula.
Understand Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a
Transportation Fuel
This speaker will describe the properties of compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas;
identify the differences as compared to liquid fuels and discuss the safety aspect of working with
these fuels. Discuss the advantages/disadvantages of compressed natural gas as a motor
vehicle fuel. Identify emissions from natural gas powered vehicles; compared to liquid fueled
internal combustion vehicles. Identify the major high-pressure components of a NGV, their
operation and safety precautions.

The cost of the class includes a kit to work with in the class and take back to school as a
teaching tool.

In this presentation we will discuss testing, certification, oral interviews and how to prepare the
students in your classroom for employment. Your Instructor, Donna Ferris, has sat on many oral
boards for Public Safety hiring. What are the tests that agencies use? What questions do they
ask in the interview to find the best candidate? This is an opportunity to discuss the different
employment tests given. You will be given hints to make your students successful on their oral
board. The presentation information will be helpful for all attendees for employment interviews.

TDLR Cosmetology Instructor Continuing Education / $35.00
This session is approved by TDLR to meet the requirements for the cosmetology instructor
license renewal. Sal meets all requirements and still finds ways to make this an exciting and
motivating session for all attendees. Hours earned may be banked for 2 years.
How Would a Practicum Work in My CTE Program?
So your administrator is suggesting a practicum for your program and you have never worked
with a practicum previously. There are many, many questions you would like answered and
rules to follow.
Attend this workshop to have some of your questions answered and find out about practicums
for CTE programs.
Small Engine Workshop and Certification Update - TBD
Clock vs. Credit Hours in Cosmetology. Which is the right choice for my program?
Some of the instructors who have converted from clock hour to credit hour will talk about why
they converted. What steps they had to take for TDLR approval and will it fit in with their other
classes? There are definite pros and cons for each system. This session should help you to
determine which method will work best for you, your students and school district.
Circuit of the Americas Tour / $30.00
The bus will leave the Omni parking lot at 11:30am to take you to the Formula 1 Race Track.
You MUST have a ticket to board the bus; this fee pays transportation cost and entrance fee to
COA. You will tour the Grand Plaza, tour the track and will disembark at Turn 1 and Turn 11.
You will tour the tower and the back stage of the amphitheater, the grandstand and, if available,
the pit and paddock area.
