from exponential to radical notation and visa/versa), and perform operations with complex numbers.
6.
Solve quadratic equations with real and complex solutions.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
The textbook for this class is: “Intermediate Algebra” by Carson/Jordan, 3rd Edition, Pearson. You will be
required to complete the Homework and Quizzes online using MyLabsPlus (MLP). In order to do this, you will
need to have a computer with internet access and basic technical/computer skills. Even if you purchase a
textbook elsewhere, you will also be required to purchase a MLP registration packet containing the access code
and register in MLP.
Choose ONE of the following options for purchasing the required MyLabsPlus access and text:

Purchase an MLP registration code packet online (lowest cost option) or at the bookstore. This option
provides access to the online textbook; it is not necessary to have a paper text.

Purchase a bundle that includes both the MLP registration code and a three-hole binder ready text book
in one package. This package will be available in the Metro bookstores. The ISBN for the
INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA PKG bundle is 1269194275.

Purchase an MLP registration code online or in the bookstore and buy or rent a text book from the
bookstore or another source. The 13 digit ISBN for the text only is: 9780321607119.
You can visit the MyLabsPlus website at: http://mccneb.mylabsplus.com
You can visit the online bookstore

Other Required Material:
You will need a notebook, paper, graph paper, pencils and a scientific calculator. Cell phones may not be used
as a calculator. Some calculators with advanced features will not be allowed on exams.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
The daily class period will consist of:
1.
Review of material from previous class meetings.
2.
Presentation of new material and topics.
3.
Discussion of the lecture material.
4.
In-class time for practice and tests.
COURSE ASSESSMENT
TESTS:
 There will be four closed-book tests, worth 50% of your grade, given during the term. Each test will be
announced in advance. There are no retake options.
 There will be a Departmental Final Exam, worth 10% of your grade. It is a closed book test that consists of
10 multiple choice questions administered during the last week of the class.
 The combined average of the tests and the final must be 60% or above to achieve a grade of C or above in
the class. All tests must be attempted to pass the class.
 Students must be present for tests. Make-up tests will only be given in the case of extreme emergencies and/or
only if the student has made arrangements prior to the test.
 If an emergency arises, a student must contact the instructor within 24 hours of the test to let the instructor
know of the circumstances for missing the test. The student must make arrangements to take the make-up test
prior to the next class meeting.
 A 10% penalty may be assessed on any test taken after the scheduled testing day.

QUIZZES:
 MyLabsPlus Quizzes are worth 20% of your grade.
 There are up to 2 attempts for each Quiz. If you are not happy with the first score, you may retake it. The
highest score will be recorded. No late submissions will be accepted, so make sure your quiz is completed on the
due date.
 You have a fixed time to complete quizzes. Once you start a quiz, you must finish it. If you try to open another
page, MyLabsPlus may close and you will not be able to continue.
 Quiz scores are automatically graded by the computer and recorded in the MLP grade book. To review a specific
Quiz, go to Results and click Review.
HOMEWORK (HW)
 There is one HW assignment in MyLabsPlus for each required section of the textbook. While the homework is
submitted online, you are expected to keep a hard copy notebook of all of your work for solving the homework.
The notebook should come to class with you each day, and I may ask to check the notebook at any time.
 MyLabsPlus HW is worth 15% of your grade.
 It is recommended that you begin to complete each HW assignment as soon as you have studied the specific
section of the textbook, however the actual due dates are listed on the syllabus.
 You have unlimited time to complete each HW and you can resume numerous times until you complete it. Each
problem may be worked up to three times by clicking Similar Exercise.
 Please make sure that your homework is submitted by the due date. Late assignments may be submitted, but
MyLabsPlus will deduct 5% from questions scored after the due date. I will not extend the due date on
homework.
 Click Submit Work when you have completed the assignment or need to stop. You may revisit the same section
anytime up to the due date and continue where you left off. Make sure you click Submit Work each time you
need to leave.
 Homework Exercises are automatically graded by the computer and recorded in MyLabsPlus Results.
 Homework scores are automatically graded by the computer and recorded in the MLP grade book. To review a
specific homework assignment, go to Results and click Review.
ATTENDANCE:
 Attendance will be worth 5% of your grade. For more details, refer to the attendance statement in the

to a refund. Go to “My Services” and click “Student Accounts”, then “Tuition Modeler” to see the refund
percentage received through midnight of the same day you “drop” withdraw from a class.
