Religion

Religion curriculum for this year focuses on the 6 tasks of Catechesis (Knowledge of the Faith,

Liturgical Formation, Moral Formation, Prayer, Church and Community Life, Missionary Spirit).

Emphasis is on the Sacraments, Beatitudes, prayer, and morality.

Science

Students will work in the areas physical science and some Earth sciences. Physical science will focus on properties of matter, motion and force, and types of energy. Earth science will focus on the formation of Earth materials. Throughout these topics students will conduct experiments with emphasis on following the scientific method.

Social Studies

The major area of emphasis will be Washington State. Students will study geography, government, history, and regions of the state. There will be extended units on Northwest Native Americans and the journey of Lewis and Clark.

Math

This year students will gain knowledge on the meaning of multiplication and division facts. They will use knowledge of place value and arrays to complete multi digit multiplication problems. Their understanding of factors and multiple will aid them in understanding long division and fractions.

Lastly, students will be completing measurement problems such as area and perimeter, and be familiarized with lines angles and shapes. These concepts are enforced through Daily Common Core

Reviews and Mad Minutes.

Vocabulary

Students will be learning “School Language” words. Student will learn 15 new words a week by saying them, using them in context, using word parts and looking them up in the dictionary.

Grammar/Writing

In grammar students will learn about sentences, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, punctuation, and capitalization. Daily Language Review (DLR) will reinforce these skills.

In writing, students will learn how to compose different realistic fiction, informational and opinion writing through the writer’s workshop format. Each unit succeeds on developing and organizing ideas with detail through mini-lessons. Students create links to previous writing knowledge, share their successes, confer with small groups, and build to a compilation of their writings, in the form of an edited and revised final draft.

Reading

Students will use the text and novels to strengthen their literacy skills. Students will be involved in 5 to 6 literature circle groups throughout the year. They will be assigned books at or near their reading level, and work in groups over 5 weeks to complete the reading and accompanying assignments. Every week they will meet with their group and discuss the weeks reading and complete a task together.

Emphasis will be on comprehension strategies as well as character, setting, plot and theme. With this, students keep weekly reading logs that require a minimum of 30 minutes of reading each night.

Another weekly assignment is Scholastic News. This helps further enforce reading for comprehension.
