Motivation, Language, and Perception
Why do people behave in a particular way? Behavior is complex and psychologists
attempt to explain human and animal behavior. People are a combination of the environment
and their biological makeup. In this Lap, the students will focus on motivation, language, and
thinking. We will expand our discussion of learning (begun in Lap 3), to include ways thinking
influences behavior and personality. In addition we’ll discuss the role of the brain itself in
behavior. Lastly, the ability to think allows us to grow and change. Overall, students will utilize
this information to understand their own personal development.
Objectives: *Compare and contrast several theories of motivation
*Explain how language and thought are related
*Explain cognition and problem solving
*Identify structures and functions of the brain
Activity 1: Motivation- Read Chapter 12.
Flip- Watch Crash Course #17 and complete the worksheet.
Review: Chapter 9, sec 2—Schedules of reinforcement

Enrichment: Keywords- Define and explain the following on loose-leaf- motivation, instincts, drives, homeostasis,
incentives, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation. THEN, answer #5 on page 317 (6-8+ sentences) and # 5 on
page 327 (5-7+).

Activity 2: Thinking, Language, and Problem Solving- Read Chapter 11.

occipital lobe, temporal lobe, and frontal lobe? C) What are the three ways the endocrine system
can affect behavior?

Film: On your own, watch Regarding Henry (1991), 50 First Dates (2004) or The Vow (2012). Write a one page+
plot summary. (BE WARE of plagiarism!! Teachers can search the internet for plot synopsis, too!) Then, write a
one page+ reaction and discuss how the movie addresses traumatic brain injury.
