INDEPENDENT READING ASSIGNMENT
BOOK JACKET OR MOVIE TRAILER PROJECT
Students will create a book jacket or movie trailer related to the novel they read. Students can
read a novel of their choice for this project. The novel must be a book you have NOT read
before. Books for this project MUST be approved by Friday April 20 th. Please note that if you
need a book from the library you must go during homeroom as we will not be visiting the
library until May. This PROJECT is due on Wednesday, May 23rd!
BOOK JACKET:
Students will create a book jacket to promote the novel. The book jacket must include a cover,
inside flaps, back and illustration inside:
ON THE COVER: Author's name, Title of book, Eye-catching illustration that leaves no white paper showing
and reflects an important part of the book. This picture should reflect the main problem in the story along
with having the main character included.
ON INSIDE LEFT FLAP: at least a two paragraph summary of the book (DO NOT reveal the ending) but
trying to hook readers into wanting to read this book, eye-catching illustration that leaves no white paper
showing.
ON INSIDE RIGHT FLAP: include information about the author; try to summarize important parts of
his/her life and any interesting facts; eye-catching illustration that leaves no white paper showing.
Between the two inside flaps you need to draw something that reflects a scene from the book
with the main character included. You only cover the area that is showing when the flaps are
closed.
ON THE BACK: You must include: two to four opinions of the book - each opinion must include the name of
a famous magazine, book critic, or an organization that reviews books; eye catching illustration.

MOVIE TRAILER PROJECT
Students will create a movie trailer to promote the novel. A movie trailer is a summary or hook
about the book that convinces readers to read the novel. This movie trailer must include at
least 10 frames with photos and captions on each frame inciting your peers to read the book.
OR the movie trailer can be a mini-movie with clips of a variety of scenes, followed by a voice
over convincing your peers to read the book. For either option you MUST include music in your
movie trailer!!! Your movie trailer MUST be over a minute long! Make sure you include credits
recognizing the sources for your project. There is an example of a movie trailer on my website

frames and/or several shots of different scenes; is over one minute long; music
related to the book, a hook or message that attempts to convince your peers to
read the novel; credits included
Movie Trailer that demonstrates little creativity, meaning is not clear, has less
than 10 frames and/or several shots of different scenes not included; is not the
appropriate length; music is missing or not related to the book, a hook or message
is not convincing to peers to read the novel; credits missing
