How were the KKK formed?
• The KKK had their roots in the small towns and rural
communities
• It began as a reaction of the defeated whites in the
aftermath of the civil war, and the fears that their way of
life was under threat
• Most member were ex-confederate soldiers
• The Ku Klux Klan were formed first in Tennessee
• One of the tactics was lynching of black Americans
• In 1892 alone, 155 African Americans were lynched
• The KKK re-emerged after World War One and the D. W.
Griffith film Birth of a Nation-the film seemed to glorify the
KKK
What did the KKK believe in?

The KKK hated black Americans
But the also hated other groups like Catholics
They hated immigrants
They saw themselves as defenders of the
traditional, Protestant way of life
What did the KKK do?
• They saw themselves as defenders of the
American way-’Morality, Americanism,
Protestantism and White Supremacy’.
• By 1921 they had over 100,000 members
• Each branch became a Klavern and several
Klaverns a Konklave
• Klaverns were under a Kleagle and Klonklaves
headed by a Grand Dragon
• The key figure in the re-founding of the KKK was
Doc Simmons, a former Methodist preacher from
Atlanta
How much support did the KKK have?
• This is a key area of debate amongst historians
• Were they just a rural organization based
mostly in the south?
• What about the role of David Curtis
Stephenson-virtually the whole state of
Indiana fell under his control in 1924
• The Pacific coast was largely untouched by the
KKK
