Senate Athletics Committee Meeting
SAC Team Conference Room
April 13, 2012 @ 11:30 a.m.
Present: Brooke Bodart, Lane David, Bruce Spitzer, Bruce Watson, Gary Demski
1. Approval of minutes from March meeting
a. Approval of minutes from March 9, 2012 Meeting. Motion to approve minutes—
unanimous.
2. Academics
a. Five members from women’s basketball team were named to the CCAC AllAcademic Team. To earn a spot on the CCAC All-Academic team an athlete
needs a minimum of a 3.25 grade point average or higher and has earned at least
30 semester or 45 trimester hours.
3. Athletics
a. Women’s Basketball
i. A total of three incoming freshmen will join the women’s basketball team
next season. Seniors Lizzie Stapke and Kayla George wrapped up
successful careers at IU South Bend.
b. Women’s Volleyball
i. Team just completed spring workouts the week ending April 13, 2012.
Coach Ashmore will be holding a tryout on April 30th to fill a couple of
open roster spots for 2012-13 school year.
c. Men’s Basketball
i. This past week Coach Tapp signed four basketball recruits for next school
year. His goal is to fill sixteen roster spots next season.
d. Athletics Banquet
i. A very successful event took place on April 1st. A total of 144 people
were in attendance to honor student-athletes and coaches. Media services
and athletics department intern Lucas Packer made end of the year videos
that were well done recapping the 2011-12 season.
e. Summer Camps & Tournaments
i. The men’s and women’s basketball program will each conduct basketball
camps this summer. Additionally, the men’s basketball staff will run two
high school tournaments in mid-June. The goal is to have 64 high schools
attend the event. Last year the tourney was a huge success with 32 local
high schools in attendance.
f. Fund-Raising
i. Each team continues to fund-raise to support their programs. Teams will
participate next year and will patrol parking lots at home Notre Dame
Football games in the Papa John’s parking lot located at Ironwood and SR
23. A total of six home dates will be covered by athletics, clubs &
organizations.
4. Open Discussion
a. IU Kokomo Expansion Announcement- Gary Demski handed out a newspaper
article that discussed expansion of athletics at IU Kokomo. IUK was originally
just going to add men’s basketball and women’s volleyball as varsity sports for
2012-13 school year. IUK announced they will be adding men’s and women’s
cross country as well for 2012-13.
b. Dr. Watson led discussion and reviewed responsibilities /charge of committee as
we went through each point listed below. The committee agreed that it is
extremely important that Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Vice
Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management are informed on
recommendations made by Senate Athletics Committee. Committee will discuss
at May meeting any recommendations that would need to be approved by Faculty
Senate if in fact changes were to be made in Constitution. Please see notes below.
c. The Athletics Committee shall:
i. Make recommendations to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
concerning the annual athletic budget, both intramural and intercollegiate,
and supportive activities.
1. Dr. Watson will look to confirm VC for Academic Affairs and see if
VC for SAEM should be added as well.
ii. Approve schedules for intercollegiate sports.
1. Student-Athlete Handbook: No Intercollegiate Athletic
Competition may be scheduled from the Saturday prior to final
examinations through Friday of exam week. Contests may be
scheduled on Saturday at the end of final exam week.
2. The committee did approve contest (December 8, 2012) for 201213 as the schedule was made a year ago due to CCAC becoming
entire Division II basketball. Conference games now go from 24
for men’s basketball and 22 for women’s basketball.
iii. Establish eligibility requirements for participation in intercollegiate
athletics.
iv. Approve participation in new intercollegiate athletic activities with the
consent of the Senate.
v. Approve participation in post-season activities.
1. Clarification was made in regards to conference tournament play
where all teams qualify vs. earning a spot to national tournament.
vi. Make recommendations to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
concerning ticket pricing policies and seating allocations.
vii. Establish policies and procedures for athletic awards, such as letters and
jackets.
viii. Propose, for the approval of the Senate, membership in athletic
conferences.
ix. In cooperation with the Financial Aid Office, determine policies
concerning allocation of athletic grants when available, in accordance with
conference policies.
x. Make personnel recommendations in the athletic area to the Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
