(girls scream louder) Speaker 5 (Meadow): People often refer to Elvis as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". Speaker 12(Matthew M): I’m not sure, but it’s the opening line from Little Richard’s first big hit – “Tutti Frutti.” Speaker 11(Brianna): Little who? Speaker 13(Eric): Little Richard – that’s who! Of course, “Little Richard” is his stage name. His real name is Richard Wayne Penniman. He is an American singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, and actor. Speaker 14(Angie): From gospel to rhythm and blues music – and a little boogiewoogie too - Little Richard laid the foundation for rock and roll. Speaker 12(Matthew M): Little Richard had a string of hits after “Tutti Frutti” - including "Long Tall Sally," and "Good Golly, Miss Molly." Speaker 13 (Eric): From his energetic piano playing to his raspy singing, Little Richard has defined the dynamic sound of rock and roll! All: A wop bop a loo bop a wop bam boom! Speaker 16(Sofia): Oh sure, it’s from the Disney movie, “The Lion King.” Timon sings it with Pumba. Speaker 17(Sanjula): I’ll bet you didn’t know that the song was originally sung by a group called the Tokens – way back in the 1960’s. Speaker 15(Lance): The Tokens? Who are they? Speaker 16(Sofia): In 1960, four boys from Brooklyn, New York, started a vocal group and called themselves The Tokens. Speaker 17(Sanjula): They recorded "The Lion Sleeps Tonight” in 1961 and it soared in the bill board charts to become the number one hit in the nation! Talking Group 3 : (Jacob, Tyler) The Tokens’ recording has sold over 15 million copies and is known – not just in the jungle - but throughout the world! Speaker 21(Justine): (laughing) Don’t worry - he’s just pretending to be Ed Sullivan because The Beatles made their first appearance in America on the Ed Sullivan show! Speaker 19(Nilaya): On February 9th, 1964, The Beatles, with their Edwardian suits and mop top haircuts, made their first American television appearance. Speaker 20(Adriana): A record setting 73 million people gathered in front their TV sets to see The Beatles’ first live performance on U.S. soil! Speaker 21(Justine): The Beatles became one of the most successful acts in the history of popular music. They still hold the record for the most number-one hits on the Hot 100 charts!
