○ Before this he was a private lawyer

● Was a lawyer for the people

● Helped develop a “right to privacy”

● Brandeis Brief

Why Brandeis was so important

● Helped develop a “right to privacy”, which meant that people had the right to be left alone if they wanted to.

○ Had to do with all the new technology (ex: photography)

● Wrote the Brandeis Brief, which said that it was important to take into account the facts of the case and not just rely on previous rulings.

○ This was the first time in American history that somebody thought rulings should be determined like this. It was because of the Muller v. Oregon case

● Married Fanny Dixwell on June 17, 1872

● Appointed to the

Supreme Court in 1902

Holden v. Hardy

● Upheld Utah’s limiting of daily working hours or miners to eight

Lochner v. New York

● Strikes down a state law limiting the maximum number of working hours for bakers

Muller v. Oregon

● Limited the number of working hours of women in Oregon.

○ Was the reason for the writing of the Brandeis brief
