Letters from John
Part 4 - Written so that you may shine!
John 2:7-14
1 John 1:1-4
2 Peter 1:5-9
“Make every effort to add to your faith
goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
and to knowledge, self-control; and to
self-control, perseverance; and to
perseverance,
godliness;
and
to
godliness, brotherly kindness; and to
brotherly kindness, love.
For if you possess these qualities in
increasing measure, they will keep you
from being ineffective and
unproductive in your knowledge of our
Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does
not have them, he is nearsighted and
blind, and has forgotten that he has
been cleansed from his past sins.”
1 John 2:6
Whoever claims to live in
him must walk as Jesus
did.
3 Sections
1. Love and Shine (verses 7-8)
2. To shine or not to shine? (verses 9-11)
3. You are shining! (verses 12-14)
1 John 2:7-14
7
Dear friends, I am not writing you a new
command but an old one, which you
have had since the beginning. This old
command is the message you have
heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new
command; its truth is seen in him and in
you, because the darkness is passing
and the true light is already shining.
9
Anyone who claims to be in the light but
hates a brother or sister is still in the
darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their
brother and sister lives in the light, and
there is nothing in them to make them
stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a
brother or sister is in the darkness and
walks around in the darkness. They do not
know where they are going, because the
darkness has blinded them.
12
I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven
on account of his name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from
the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil
one.
14
I write to you, dear children,
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from
the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
1 John 2:7

Dear friends, I am not writing you a
new command but an old one, which
you have had since the beginning.
This old command is the message you
have heard.
Romans 13:8
“Let no debt remain outstanding,
except the continuing debt to love
one another, for he who loves his
fellowman has fulfilled the law.”
1 Peter 1:22
Now that you have purified
yourselves by obeying the truth so
that you have sincere love for each
other, love one another deeply,
from the heart.
1 John 2:7-8

Dear friends, I am not writing you a new
command but an old one, which you
have had since the beginning. This old
command is the message you have
heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new
command; its truth is seen in him and in
you, because the darkness is passing
and the true light is already shining.
Love is OLD
Deuteronomy 6:5 - “Love the LORD God
with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength.”

bear a grudge against one of your
people, but love your neighbor as

Yet I am writing you a new
command; its truth is seen in him
and in you, because the darkness is
passing and the true light is already
shining.
1 Corinthians 13:4-6

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not
envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5
It does not dishonor others, it is not
self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it
keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does
not delight in evil but rejoices with the
truth.
John 15:13
13
Greater love has no one
than this: to lay down one’s
life for one’s friends.
1 John 2:8

Yet I am writing you a new command; its
truth is seen in him and in you, because
the darkness is passing and the true
light is already shining.

“For he has rescued us from the dominion
of darkness and brought us into the
kingdom of the Son he loves…”

another. As I have loved you, so you must
love one another.
