LIBRARY: KNOWLEDGE,
RESOURCE CENTRE & ROLE OF
TEACHER/LIBRARIAN
PRESENTATION BY:
NILESH M. TANDEL (LIBRARIAN)
J.N.V. SAPUTARA
INTRODUCTION:

The old concept of libraries as store house
of book is fast changing and giving place to the
global libraries using. Library is the fulcrum of
support for the academic activities in any
institution of higher studies. These have,
therefore, no option except to adopt changes at
the earliest due to the changing user’s demanda
as a result of the drastic developments in the
information communication technology. Today
is becoming unmanageable to handle with the
traditional tools.

The school library provides information,
inculcates ideas, and develops knowledge that
is so essential to functioning successfully in
today's information and knowledge based
society, In order to equip students with life
long learning skills, to develop in them
creative thinking and imagination, and enable
them to live as ideal and responsible citizens, a
school library is a basic and fundamental
requirement.
DEVELOPING READING SKILLS
AMONG STUDENTS:



One of the most important tasks of the school library is to inculcate
reading habits among young generations. Books are the mute
entities; their application does not come automatically. It always
requires some human agency that can induce the value of books
among the students. In the school environment this human agency is
Teacher/Librarian. To achieve this there must be close coordination
between classroom teaching and use of Library resources.
It is an important part of Teacher/Librarian's role to encourage
reading and library use positively. To assure the best results it would
be necessary to provide regular and continuous service by the
Librarian in the use of Library.
There are many programmers a librarian can introduce with the
help of teachers and motivate students to read. Some of the
programmers already implemented, and some which are in the
process of being started are as follows:
READING


There is good saying that “ Reading is a basic
tool in the living of a good life” and another
famous one which says “ Reading is to the
mind what exercise is to the body”.
Some benefits of reading are:
1. Reading helps children develop vital
language skills.
2. Opens up acquisition of new words
and enriches children’s lives.



3.
4.
5.

Enhances children’s social skills.
improves hand-eye coordination.
provides children with plenty of good,
clean fun!
Reading is also essential for acquiring a rich
vocabulary. It is this lack of vocabulary that is a single
reason for our students to perform so poorly in the tests
and exams in any subject.
HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR
READEING HABIT






1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Pick up a book.
Practice your reading habit.
Don’t give up.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
Before you start reading a book, browse the
table of contents to form an idea of what
the book is about.
6. Read a review of the book before deciding
whether to read it or not.






1. by keeping watch on the interests of the
readers.
2. by setting up book lovers club/readers club.
3. by issuing new arrivals list subject wise.
4. by displaying on boards for students
information.
5. current awairness.
6. Did you know?
ROLE OF LIBRARIAN





Some manor roles of a school librarian are
1. to develop among the readers pleasant and
positive attitude towards reading.
2. to supplement the course of education
formally of informally.
3. to think and plan which books to add and
what the student can do with books.
4. are responsible to create opportunities to go
out and tell the students what they have in
their libraries.

Again, many skills will develop quickly. Some
children may need to learn how to handle
books properly. Do this by setting a good
example and correcting behavior when you see
a child doing something inappropriate with a
book. It saeems that books become Frisbees at
the beginning of the school year until proper
handling techniqes are learned.
TEACHER’S ROLE IN THE
LIBRARY CENTER

Read to children at least once a day. The more
enthusiastic you can tell the story, the more
children will learn to love books. My own
children love for me to read books that have a
tongue twister in them or silly rhyming
patterns. Children will of course develop
favorites that they will want use to read over
and over again. Engage the children about the
book. Ask questions about what is going on or
what will happen.



5. motivate students to find out what they
want to read, improve.
6. expected to improve the set-up of the
library to encourage readers to stay and
browse.
7 Advise staff members in the selection of
appropriate reading materials for enhancing
the work skills.

MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES:







QUIZ COMPETITION :
the quiz is aimed at encouraging students to read beyond their textbooks in school and promotion of
books as a source of information. This activity can be taken up once in a month for different levels of
classes.
BOOK REVIEW :
Each class in rotation can be asked to present book review in the morning assemble on a designated
day.
STORY HOURS:
Story telling is one of the easiest activities for the library to organize. Traditional tales or short
stories of the same type and picturebook are the easiest to use.

USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY :




Today's world is the world of information technology. There are
number of choices available to readers whether he or she wants to
read for recreation or for professional growth. The internet is flooded
with all kinds of information one wants to dabble in. the only
requirement for developing reading skills through new technologies is
an adequate exposure of students to the vast world of digitized
information.
There are new technologies which can be clubbed with their
reading. Some of them are
Use of internet, cd, dvd, video-audio cassettes.
Now day's students are required to do a lot of work in the form of
assignments and projects which requires the help of the internet. They
need to be specific in providing the names of the sites to look for the
specific information. This is to avoid the wastage of time.
LCD projectors for used to present information. This is a very useful
technique of summarizing information in points which students are
encouraged to read and note down.
USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY





E-BOOKS:
Its Electronic book which comes in digital version. Unlike
the traditional book which we see physically on paper and in
print form, it has to be read on a computer screen. For reading
a e-book, one would need e-book reader software. E-book
reading devices are also available which facilitate e-book
reading.
E-JOURNAL:
E-Journal is the digital version of the print journal. EJournals are made available by the Publishers to the
prospective readers/users via internet and e-mail.
Teachers can also use such technology at school with
numerous interactive reading programs and assessments that
are available free online.
