History
•
In 1978, Kip Tindell, Garrett Boone and John Mullen opened a retail store in
hopes of offering an exceptional and diverse mix of products devoted to helping
people simplify their lives.
•
With a clear vision of the retail store they wanted to create, there was a first year
start-up investment of only $35,000.
•
In 1978, most of the products The Container Store sold came from commercial
or industrial manufacturers, and had never been sold in a retail environment.
•
Original store was 1600 square feet which by 1980 expanded twice.
•
Today, locations coast to coast, stores average 25,000 square with more than
10,000 innovative products to help customers save space and save them time.
What is it all about?
•
“We're a company known for impeccable customer service and expert
salespeople. We're a company that insists on having fun. Simply put,
we approach retail differently. In fact, for these reasons and more,
we've been at the top of FORTUNE magazine's list of "100 Best
Companies To Work For In America" eight years in a row.”
•
Mission: “is to support our stores so that they are able to do what is
most important in retail — serve our customers' needs”
•
The store layout is divided into lifestyle sections marked with brightly
colored banners such as Closet, Kitchen, Office and Laundry. Wherever
you look in the store, there's always someone in a blue apron who's
ready to help solve everything.
