The difference between service and facilities:
Service: Functions offered by staff to make the tourists stay easier –
laundry service, shuttle service
Facilities: Extras provided to the tourists – swimming pool. Gym, spa,
gift shop, DSTV
Shuttle service: Transport provide by accommodation establishment
to and from the airport
Self-catering accommodation: Accommodation with a built in
kitchen, guests supply and cook their own food
Advantages of using a self-catering establishment:
Can prepare your own food
Decide on your own eating times’
Cheaper than eating out at restaurants
Disadvantages of using a self-catering establishment:
Need to take some of your own kitchen utensils
May need to pay for help to clean up or do it yourself
It feels as if you are not on holiday
Why the grading system is important to the travel agent
and tourist
It influences the price that an establishment can ask
The tourist can budget
The travel agent can match the budget of the tourist
Reasons why tourist wants certain technology in their
rooms: Helps to make their stay more pleasant - TV and
DVD
It helps them to keep in touch with home and work –
internet, wireless networks
Information a tourist can access using VDA in the hotel
room: Information about hotel facilities, menus, nearby
attractions, weather forecasts, hotel bill, wake-up calls

excellence.
The meaning of the stars: Star grading applies to
both serviced and self-catering establishments.

Grading is a constant quality control
ONE *
This means fair to good (acceptable/modest) quality in
the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest
care. It is clean, comfortable and functional
accommodation. Offers continental breakfast. Soap
and bath towel in room
TWO **
There is a good quality in the overall standard of
furnishings, service and guest care. Offers continental
breakfast and a limited variety of cooked foods. Soap,
hand and bath towel in room.
THREE ***
There is very good quality in the overall standard of
furnishings, service and guest care. Breakfast with
extensive of variety. Shower gel, shampoo, wrapped
soap, hand and bath towel. Additional furniture
such as a desk, room is more spacious
FOUR ****
There is superior (excellent) comfort and quality with
a high standard of furnishing, service and guest care.
Fully cooked breakfast or buffet on offer. Bedrooms
must have a working area with a desk. 18 hours of
room service must be available. Shampoo,
conditioner, shower gel, wrapped soap. Body lotion,
shower cap, all towels and face cloth
FIVE *****
This means exceptional quality and luxurious
accommodation (matching best international standards)
with the highest standard of furnishings, flawless service
and guest care.
24 hour room service. Fully cooked breakfast served all
day.

Terminology used in accommodation sector
In peak season: Busiest time of the year, usually during school

Off Peak season: A time of year when business is slow and

En suite: Room with a bathroom attached to the room
