The War Continues
Civil War At Sea
 The Trent Affair – 2 Confeds (Mason &
Slidell) boarded British ship The Trent in
Cuba to try to get British help in war.
 Captain Wilkes stopped ship and seized
them.
 British upset, threatened to send troops
to Canada
 Lincoln released them, said Wilkes acted
on his own
Blockade Runners
 By 1862, most Southern ports were
guarded
 Blockade Runners were ships that snuck
through to export cotton and import
needed goods.
 Most crew members were British, any
Confederates would be imprisoned.
War in the West
 Lincoln wanted to keep western loyalty
so he didn’t enforce draft in the west, but
many volunteered.
 About 10,000 natives fought (both sides)
 Union moved troops to fight war, natives
revolted. Confeds moved in and signed
treaties with natives.

 Lee’s troops led surprise attack on
Hooker
 May 2, 1863
 Around 30,000 casualties combined
 Stonewall Jackson mistakenly shot by his
own troops
 Brilliant victory for Lee – he decided to
invade the North again
Battle of Gettysburg
 Lee had won at Chancellorsville, VA
 Wanted to invade north to tip political balance of the
war - Crossed into PA
 3-day battle, turning point of the war (July 1-3, 1863)
 Day 1: Hill’s army heard about supply of footwear in
Gettysburg, went to find it & met up with Lee
 They ran into union cavalry, fighting broke out, each
side sent for reinforcements
 Union armies under Meade began to fall back

 Day 2 - 90,000 Union, 75,000 Confeds ready to fight
 Lee ordered attack on Cemetery Ridge, Chamberlain
bayonet charge at Rebels, who surrendered in droves
 Day 3 – vicious exchange of artillery fire, Lee retreated
 Killed or wounded:
North 23,000, South 28,000
 Lee gave up hope of invading
 North again, South never
recovered from loss here and at
Vicksburg next day

 Ran out of food, ate mules and dogs
 Confederates surrendered July 4, 1863
 Port Hudson fell on July 9th, giving union
control of MS River and dividing South
