AP Environmental Science
Summer Preparation Program
Welcome to AP Environmental Science! Due to the nature and rigor of this course, summer work will be required.
Summer is approximately 84 days long (12 weeks) which is 2016 hours. You will need to devote about 5 hours per week
to completing the summer work (this includes reading time). Your first task is to calculate how much of your summer
will be devoted to preparing for this class. You must do this without a calculator and you must show your work! The
answer is below, but no cheating.
Did you calculate 3%? This means you have the remaining 1956 hours of summer to do as you wish!
In order to participate in AP Environmental Science, the student is required to complete the following by the first FULL
day of school which is September 10th. If this work is not complete the student may not continue with the course.
REQUIRED
 Complete all the work from the Google Classroom website and submit the work via Google Classroom.
https://classroom.google.com/c/MTAxMjI3Njg4 These assignments will be live July 10th and include:
o Readings of the supplements and chapters in the book to build background.
o Practice questions to answer to support building that background.
o Short quizzes that can be submitted online or via paper on the first FULL day at school to check for
understanding.
 Check my website weekly for APES updates. Monitor the Summer APES link, and review all other APES links for
next year. The link and directions for logging onto the Google Classroom will be found on my website. The code
for logging in is ynb9hy.
OPTIONAL and HIGHLY ENCOURAGED (This is a 2-For-1! This counts for both APES and English.)
 Students may earn extra credit (Above and Beyond Required ABR) in science by reading Bill Bryson’s A Short
History of Nearly Everything and completing an assignment for each section. Minimum reading to count for an
“assignment” is approximately 100 pages and can be used for a required reading and visual in your English class.
Readings are divided into 4 sections: Part 1-2 (Chapter 1-7), Part 3-4 (Chapters 8-15), Part 5 (Chapters 16-26) and
Part 6 (Chapters 27-30). If you complete all it will count as 4 extra credit assignments.
o Create an annotated bibliography (Works Cited) page. See English summer reading requirement sheet
for directions.
o Create something visual to show when you present your books to your freshman English class in the fall.
This can be almost ANYTHING, including a poster, a PowerPoint, puppets, a drama, a model or diorama,
drawings of strong scenes, book jacket, etc. Be creative! Any quality visual aide qualifies.
 Study the VOCABULARY list (flash cards) given to you by your 8th grade teachers. Have a smart phone/ check out
the Quizlet Ap
Do know that if you have ANY questions you can contact me via email over the summer. My email address is
winslow@skitsap.wednet.edu .
I am so excited for next year-APES ROCKS!
