The Situation

salary.
Your promotion is contingent upon finding a
suitable replacement to take over your
current duties .
Human Resources has narrowed the pool of
candidates to two people: Stephanie
Howard and Desmond Wright , both
Valencia College students.
You must interview these two people and
prepare a memo to your boss explaining
which person you recommend as your
replacement .

Don’t bring your parents, spouse, or friend to
the interview.
Remember that interviews
are like essays. You must
be interesting. If you sound
like everyone else, no hiring
manager will remember you.
Meet the candidates.
Hello. My
name is
Stephanie. I
am so happy
that you
agreed to
interview me!
How do you
do? I am
Desmond,
and I am
hoping to be
the person to
fill the position
that you are
advertising.
Let the questions begin ...
What skills from past jobs would
you bring to a position with us?
I’ve worked as a
bank teller at
SunTrust, so I
know how to
interact with
people and dress
professionally.
Plus, I’ve handled
huge sums of
money and have
never stolen a
dime!
I’ve spent my
summers working
for my uncle’s
landscaping
business. I don’t
mind hard,
physical labor. I
am good at
mechanical
repairs, and I
know many things
about plants,
bugs, and
chemicals.
What is your greatest strength?
Everyone tells
me that I am a
people person. I love
to meet new
people, talk to
people, really
help people out!
I am very
strong in
math and
science,
but I hate
English and
humanities
classes!
Writing
papers is
such a bore!
I’d rather be
in the
biology lab
dissecting a
rat.
What is your greatest weakness?
I have a
really hard
time getting
up early in
the morning.
I’m a night
owl, not a
morning
person! So a
late
schedule
works best
for me.
I can be such a
perfectionist.
I will work and
work and work
until the task I
have to
complete is
done to my
impeccable
standards.
What are your short-term goals?
I want to acquire
as much work
experience this
year as
possible so that I
have a better
chance of
landing an
internship with a
Fortune 500
company next
year.
I have to get
a job this
month or my
parents say
that they will
kick me out of
the house
and not pay
for my college
classes next
semester.
Plus, I am
saving money
to buy rims
for my Honda.
What are your long-term goals?
I want to
complete my
bachelor’s
degree in
finance at UCF
and then get my
MBA at Rollins.
I want to get a
master’s degree
in science
education and
return to Boone
High School to
teach. Go,
Braves!
Describe a contribution you made to a

Describe a contribution you made to a
project.
When my family
remodeled the
bathroom, Dad
trusted me to cut
all of the tiles
because of my
precision and
perfectionist
standards.
Yo, bro, how
much longer?
You promised me
a cheesy burger if
I drove you to
this thing.
How well do you work under
pressure?
I need a lot of
coffee, but
once the caffeine
kicks in, I can get
a lot done!
I hate rushing
and feeling
panicked! I prefer
to budget my time
carefully so that I
don’t have to
work under
pressure.
Why did you decide to seek a
position here?
This job would
be so close to
my home. With
gasoline prices
constantly
fluctuating, I
wouldn’t have to
spend all my
paycheck filling
my tank!
My father plays
golf with your
boss, who
mentioned to Dad
that you needed
someone to fill
this position right
away.
What kind of work environment
makes you most comfortable?
I prefer to be
inside in the air
conditioning.
Who wants
sweat soaking
their armpits?
Also, I like
teamwork.
I can be
comfortable
anywhere you
decide to put me.
If you give me a
job to do, I
personally will
make sure it gets
done!
When are you available to work?
If you select me
for this job and
tell me the
schedule, I will
register for
classes that
don’t conflict
with when you
need me.
My teachers are
flexible about
attendance, but I
have church
commitments
on Wednesday
evening and all
day Sunday.
Otherwise, I am
free!
Do you have anything that you
want to ask?
I have an
amazing
Facebook
page that
Would I get paid
every week or
every other
week? If I get
the job, of
course!
features my fierce
Honda. Would
you like me to
show you?
Thanks for
talking to me. I
would make a
great employee
who would bring
energy and
smiles to this
job!
Thank you for
the opportunity
to interview. I
hope you make a
decision soon!
Write a memo to your boss.
• Use this format for the document:
• Open with an introductory paragraph that
•
•
•
explains the task you received .
Write a paragraph that details
Stephanie’s characteristics , both her
strengths and weaknesses as your potential
replacement.
Then write a paragraph that details
Desmond’s characteristics , both his
strengths and weaknesses for filling your
shoes.
Then write a paragraph that explains why one
candidate is better than the other. Make a
case for the person who should replace you .
• Write at least 500 words. Do not go way
over as some of you like to do.
Format the memo like this:
M e m o
To:
Todd Hurley, President of Hurley
Medical Supply
From:
Mark Hayden, sales and customer
service representative
Date:
July 22, 2015
Subject:
My replacement
As you explained, my promotion is contingent upon
finding someone suitable to fill my current job. HR
narrowed the pool of candidates to two people,
Stephanie Howard and Desmond Wright. Both of these
Valencia College students have much to offer. I
spent last Friday talking to them both, trying to …
There is not one right
candidate for the job.
Whether you pick
Stephanie or Desmond
will depend on which
person best replaces you
in your current position.
Here are two sample
concluding paragraphs ...
This student argues for
Stephanie:
A bartender must handle money, make drinks,
and take care of customers. Because of these
responsibilities, I believe Stephanie Wright
would be the best fit. She let me know that
she is a “people person,” so we know that she
can handle guest interactions. With her
history as a bank teller, we would also be
able to trust her cash transactions and
keeping the drawer even. She seems to work
well under pressure, so we could count on her
during the busy season. Also, since she
prefers to work later, we wouldn’t have to
rearrange our scheduling. Stephanie Wright is
going to fit perfectly in my position.
This student argues for
Desmond:
As you know, my duties are as follows:
coordinating volunteer work, holding seminars
about protecting the environment, facilitating
field trips for elementary school children,
planting trees and shrubs, evaluating plants
for pests, and writing reports on all of the
above. Of the two candidates, I believe that
Desmond is a better replacement for me because
of his ability to handle physical work and be
out in an open, often inclement environment.
His experience working with plants and his
knowledge of parasites and pesticides are very
helpful for my current position. As a selfdescribed perfectionist, Desmond will best
fill my current job.
