Lesson 1: Where are the Hungry?
Introduction
Grade Level: 10th
Projected Length: 2 days
Students to be able to:
 Analyze maps on where groups of people are hungry
 Assess how hunger is defined
 Evaluate and examine hunger statistics worldwide
 Explore why hunger is predominant in Somalia and Central America
New York State Standards
 Standard 2: World History
o Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding
of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history
and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives.
 Standard 3: Geography
o Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding
of the geography of the interdependent world in which we live—local, national,
and global—including the distribution of people, places, and environments over
the Earth’s surface.
Materials and Setup: SmartBoard or iPads, Map handout
Technology Utilized: Website for exploration; Glogster; Video clips; Website slideshow; Blogs
Aim: Where does world hunger exist?
Procedure Day 1:
1. Do Now: In your notebook, talk about how you felt at the Hunger Banquet. What are
some of your thoughts and emotions that come to mind? (5-7 Minutes)
2. Discuss the Do Now. (4-5 Minutes)
3. Handout the map of countries affected by world hunger.

4. Analyze the map and talk about where world hunger is predominantly located. (5-7
Minutes)
5. Have the children pull up the following website on their iPads. If there are no iPads,
display the website on the SmartBoard. http://www.wfp.org/hunger
6. For the rest of the period, look at the Overview, What is Hunger, and Who are the
Hungry together.
7. Also look at Hunger Stats, Hunger FAQ, and if time, Hunger Glossary.
Assessment Day 1: Pick a country out of a hat and compile statistics about hunger and poverty
in that country. Use Glogster to make a flyer. Include the following:
 Country Name
 Population
 Average Annual Population Growth
 % in poverty
 Life expectancy at birth
 Infant mortality
 Child Malnutrition
 Access to an improved water source
 Literacy rate
 GDP
Procedure Day 2:

2. Discuss the Video. (3-5 Minutes)
3. Tell them to take out their homework and pick several students to share with the class. (58 Minutes)
4. Currently, Somalia is facing the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. Watch the

8. Closure: How does geography affect a population?
Assessment: On your blog, discuss the famine in Somalia and floods in Central America. How
do they impact the population’s food source? What are some ways to alleviate the hardship in
these countries?
Lesson 2: Causes of Hunger

Students to be able to:
 Evaluate the causes of world hunger
 Assess the impact of climate change on world hunger
 Analyze the relationship between climate change and world hunger through the use of
maps

Lesson 3: Famous Hunger Crises in History - Ireland
Introduction

Projected Length: 2 day
Students to be able to:
 Evaluate the causes of the potato famine in Ireland
 Assess the impact of the famine on history
 Analyze an eyewitness account on the famine

Aim: How did the potato famine affect the Irish?
Procedure Day 1:
1. Do Now: In your notebook, answer the following question: How would you feel if
you were hungry? (2-3 Minutes)
2. Discuss the Do Now. (3-5 Minutes)
3. Handout the group project.
4. Allow time for the group to get together and read the articles.(30-35 Minutes)
5. Reiterate that you want each person to be involved in the presentation of facts to the
class as a whole.
Assessment: Using your notes and knowledge of history, what impact did the potato famine
have on Ireland? What were the effects of the potato famine? Write about it on your blog.

Potato Famine Project
Using the website, thehistoryplace.com, you will be split into groups of three based on the
following categories:
1. Introduction
2. Before the Famine
3. The Blight Begins
4. The Great Famine
5. Coffin Ships
6. Financial Ruin
7. After the Famine
Directions:
Using your iPad or school computer, go on http://www.historyplace.com/worldhistory/famine/.
You will find the articles listed above. In your group, read the article and summarize it to tell the
rest of the class tomorrow. You will have five minutes to present it to the class. While the other
students are presenting, take notes! This will count as part of your participation grade. If you do
your part and thoroughly present the information, you will receive full credit.
