The Land Snail Project
Assigned: _____________ Due ___________ Point Value: ____________
You are to be graded on: proper fold, following the specific directions, title w/title picture colored, number
the pages, fill the page with writing (12 font) that actually answers the questions, color pictures, and quality
work. If you plagiarize – copy – you will receive a zero! You must totally put things
in your own words! A SHORT quote is ok – short.
1. Panel 1 and 2: Give me details about the five main characters in the novel OTHER than Paul.
2. Panel 3: How – through the book – does Paul obtaining this tract of land guarantee him freedom for his
family?
3. Panel 4: Robert and Paul drift apart as Paul moves into adolescence. Give me at least three examples
of this.
4. Panel 5 and 6: How does Edward Logan differentiate between raising his black and white sons? Keep in
mind that he knows the boys will leave the plantation and he wants to prepare them for life off the
plantation. Is Edward a racist? Give me examples.
5. Panel 7 and 8: How does Paul’s refusal to accept help from whites after his brother Robert’s betrayal
persist throughout the book? Give me plenty of examples.
6. Panel 9: How does Paul engage in passive methods of fighting? His father, early in the book
“admonishes him to fight with his head, not his fists.” Think about the way Paul “fights” against the
injustices in the book. Give me examples.
7. Panel 10 and 11: Tell me about the symbols of Horses, Land and the Rocking Chair. How are they
important in this novel? Be very, very careful with this one. 13 students got snagged for plagiarizing
last year. That is a ZERO.
8. Panel 12: In the third chapter, Paul and Mitchell have a conversation about family. Explain this
quotation: “Jus’can’t understand how it feels t’ have a white daddy, that’s all. . .”
9. Panel 13: Paul and his Father exchange these portentous (ominous, fateful, threatening) remarks in
the fourth chapter. This is a turning point. Why? “You’ve got to learn, Paul, and you’ve got to learn
now, you don’t ever hit a white man. Ever . . . “
10. Panel 14: Explain this passage from the tenth chapter: “You know, Mitchell done thought the world of
you, Paul-Edwards. He said he done figured you his family. . . .Not just friends. Brothers.”
11. Panel 15: What differences exist between Mitchell and Paul in their reaction to bigotry? Do you
respect one of them more? Why?
12. Panel 16: Illustrate (computer generated ok) and color the most important scene in the novel. In one
sentence identify the scene.
