Understand Koch’s postulate
Understand what a microorganism is
Know the difference between bacteria, algae, fungi, viruses, and protozoans
Chapter 3
Know the basic characteristics of prokaryotic cells
-especially prokaryotic cells and their cell walls and the difference between gram
positive and gram negative
Know the basic cell structures and their function
Understand the LPS
Chapter 4
Understand measurements used for microbiology
Understand resolution and what you can do to increase resolution
Know the basic types of microscopes and their uses
Know why dyes work the way they do
Know the basics (dyes used and order) of the Gram Stain and Acid Fast Stain.
Understand how the gram stain works
Know why we do the Acid Fast Stain
Understand the basics of how we classify organisms

Understand what is meant by microbial growth
Know the definition of the terms autotroph and heterotroph and know the different
kinds (e.g. chemoautotrophs)
