Responsible Alcohol Management
COMPANY HISTORY AND MISSION
Responsible Alcohol Management (RAM) is a personal alcohol management
program based on the research of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
(NIAAA), a component group of the NIH. An Act of Congress created the NIAAA on
December 31, 1970 with the mission of “providing leadership in the national effort to
reduce alcohol-related problems”.
Stephen Cook Myers, a 40-year veteran of marketing alcohol at both the
wholesale and retail level, founded the company in 2009. He adopted the unfinished
mission of the NIAAA of “translating and disseminating research findings to … the
public”.
After carefully analysis of the research of the agency and comprehending their
Strategic Five-Year Plan, Myers determined that there are at least seven long-term effects
of alcohol consumption that were unknown to the Alcohol Beverage Industry (ABI) and
the public in general. He also discovered that many of the researchers who made these
discoveries developed and implemented nutritional therapies that help protect the body
from the detrimental effects.
In the mid 1990s he purchased the recently published book by the Mount Sinai
School of Medicine, Total Nutrition. A chapter titled The Nutritional Effects of Alcohol
by Charles S. Lieber MD captured his interest. Following the paper trail of Dr. Lieber’s
research led to the NIAAA and a virtual gold mine of discoveries by the top scientists in
their field.
Mr. Myers is the author of The ABCs of Alcohol and Nutrition – A Reciprocal
Relationship. The book reveals multiple benefits and eight short-term and long-term
effects of alcohol consumption. With each of the effects he offers the nutritional solutions
and implores the major producers of the ABI to promote them. The book is available on
Amazon.com.
He currently is a wine consultant for a large retail chain in Florida where he
educates consumers on healthy choices of all types of alcohol.

Responsible Alcohol Management
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Steve Myers has been selling alcohol responsibly since 1974. After eight years of
distribution sales, he spent the next eighteen years as a retailer. Shortly after becoming a
retailer, the State of Maryland mandated responsible vendor training for all license
holders. The trade association he belonged to adopted TAM, Techniques of Alcohol
Management, a program developed by a hospitality trade group in Michigan. Here he
learned how to control the short-term effects of alcohol, rapid Blood Alcohol
Concentration (BAC). Simply by eating protein prior to and during the consumption of
alcohol, drinkers could prevent 80% of the alcohol from getting into the bloodstream. He
immediately applied the new science by offering low cost protein snacks of peanuts, meat
sticks and cheese and crackers.
After completing recertification many years later, he realized the program never
evolved, even though the industry changed dramatically. Most disturbing to him was the
practice of mixing so-called energy drinks with alcohol.
After relocating to Florida he developed a responsible vendor program, but soon
realized the group most in need of the education were middle and senior adult consumers.
It became apparent that long-term consumption of alcohol contributes to many of the
diseases prevalent in today’s society, including cancer, diabetes and obesity.

Responsible Alcohol Management
SYNOPSIS
The ABCs of Alcohol and Nutrition:
A Reciprocal Relationship
The book reveals a relationship between alcohol and nutrition (food)
that extends far beyond pairing the right beverage with a particular entrée. It
is based on 40 years of research conducted by and for the National Institute
on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a component group of the
National Institute of Health (NIH) of the Department of Health and Human
Services of the United States Government. The researchers investigated the
benefits and effects of alcohol consumption, both short-term and long-term.
Many of the researchers went on to developed nutritional solutions for the
adverse effects to protect their patients.
After eight years of analyzing these studies the author realized that
the relationship between alcohol and food that goes far beyond pairing the
food and beverage. There exists a reciprocal relationship between alcohol
and nutrition, in that,
Alcohol Complements Food;
Food Protects The Body

EXCERPT
PART II: ALCOHOL and NUTRITION:
EIGHT STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR BODY
OVERVIEW:
The eight steps revealed in his section are proactive methods of coping with the
short and long-term effects produced by alcohol consumption. The effects were
discovered through the work of Dr. Charles Lieber, various research groups like the
NIAAA, the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO), and dozens of scientific
studies.
To understand and apply the eight steps, consumers must first accept the fact
that the effects produced by alcohol consumption truly exist. The effects have been proven
by science, and the science is irrefutable. Challenge the experts if you will, but they
represent some of the brightest minds on earth.
The eight steps to vibrant health consist of two segments, (1) the short-term effect
and (2) the long-term effects of alcohol. The short-term effect consists of a single
problem, elevated blood alcohol concentration. You can easily protect the body by
following Step 1 – Eat Protein. The long-term effects can be divided into three parts, (I)
Cellular Health covered in Step 2 and Step 3, (II) Nutritional Health of fueling the body
with food and water discussed in Step 4 and Step 5, and (III) Hormonal Health, as
explained in Step 6, Step 7 and Step 8.
After identifying the effects, I followed Dr. Lieber’s work and the work of other
researchers, to establish any nutritional methods to help protect the body from the
effects. As Dr. Lieber stated, alcohol is a drug and a highly toxic poison, but it is also a
food. It just makes sense that there would be nutritional foods and supplements that
would be part of the solution.

TESTIMONIAL
“It is widely accepted among researchers that the moderate consumption of
alcohol (beer, wine and spirits) is associated with better health and greater longevity
than is either abstaining or abusing alcohol.
But exactly how is alcohol metabolized, how can it be beneficial and how can it
be harmful, how can we promote moderate consumption while reducing alcohol abuse,
and what are the practical implications of what we know for health and wellness?
It is addressing the latter that is the heart of this very readable book. Based on
current knowledge of physiology and nutrition, the author identifies eight concrete steps
that we can take to protect and enhance our health and safety.
In the final analysis, this short volume identifies major alcohol problems and
suggests solutions for them. In that sense, it presents not only the ABCs but also the XYZs
of alcohol beverages. Alcohol consumers, retailers, parents, teachers, policy makers and
many others will find helpful and thought provoking information throughout the book,
which concludes with nine useful appendices.”
