The Hip Hop movement started New York City in
working class neighborhoods in the late 1970s.
Many saw the beginning of Hip Hop were in the
Bronx borough, namely the South Bronx. The Hip
Hop sound can be categorized by rhythmic beats
with percussion emphasis. Usually rap would be
put on top of the beat and rappers would try to
rap with the rhythm eat and catch every beat.
This style began during the 1970s. The genre of
Hip Hop is a mixture of R&B and Soul. This style
incorporates poetry and meaning into the lyrics.
Neo Soul is very different from other styles of
Hip Hop, it does not really focus on things like
parties, drinking and sex. Artists focus more on
expressing feelings and motivating people with
powerful lyrics.

Hardcore Rap, is a popular subgenre of the Hip
Hop Culture and its beginning were in the early
1980s and on the east coast. Hardcore Hip Hop
focused on the artist’s upbringing in tough urban
areas. Simple, rough cut beats, paired with
aggressive vocals, creates a sound that feels like
tension, the sound helped you become part of
the artist’s life.

The New Jack Swing is a style of music that late
1980s- mid 1990s, this style does not have a
definite home. However, it is a fusion of Hip Hop
and R&B. This style has Hip Hop beats with R&B
vocals and usually a dance-pop feel. It is the
lover and fighter; the lover being R&B and the
fighter being Hip Hop and coming as one.

Another style of the Hip Hop is a style known as
Rapcore which is a musical hybrid of hip hop,
punk rock, and hardcore punk. Artists often fuse
singing and rapping over rhythmic beats. The use
of real instruments and a band instead of
produced beats is what sets rapcore apart from
other genres of hip hop.This style of Hip Hopstyle
started in the late 80’s, however received
mainstream success throughout the 1990’s.
Rapcore’s pioneers were a group named the
Beastie Boys.

Conscious rap focuses on creating awareness
and imparting knowledge to the listeners. Most
songs contain positive, uplifting messages
delivered over smooth beats. This style of HipHop was popularized in the 1990s. Conscious
rappers view the world, analyze it, dissect it and
rap about what they have uncovered. Since
conscious rappers often create music for a small
market and usually it is not made for the radio.
They are generally less “successful” than their
mainstream counterparts; with the exception of
a few, like Nas and Kanye West.

Nerdcore is a genre of Hip Hop that mainly
focuses on topics that are considered “nerdy”.
This style relatively new. It was created in the
early 2000s. MC Frontalot is known as the
founder. Some of the frequently used topics that
are talked about in the songs include science
fiction, video games, computers and the
environment.

Snap music incorporates finger-snapping and
occasional whistling to create a distinct melody.
In 2005, Snap was invented for the use at
nightclubs and the tempo is usually slow with a
chill vibe. Although, who invented Snap is under
debate, there's no doubt that the playful rap
sub-genre was conceived in Atlanta, GA. D4L's
single "Laffy Taffy" one of the most digitally
downloaded songs in the history of iTunes.
