refreshments from 9:30-10 a.m. in the Narthex.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
We are collecting the following for August:
Food Pantry: sweet potatoes and cereal
Shared Bounty: shampoo and conditioner
Please place in containers in the Coat Room.
The Via de Cristo Travelers from St. John's are
leading music at outdoor worship today at 10:00 at Zion
Lutheran Church in Gibsonburg.
Call Committee Update ~ Since our last Call Committee
update, our members have been meeting weekly to develop
interview questions and hone our interviewing skills. We
held a mock interview on July 22 with Pastor Randy
Windsand of Zion Lutheran in Luckey, who graciously
allowed us to practice our interview skills on him. It
proved to be a very good session with some excellent
question suggestions from his point of view. Our
Committee will continue to keep on top of these skills as
we move forward in the call process. Please continue to
keep our committee and our Synod office facilitator in
your prayers as we search for the candidate who fits St.
John's needs. Yours in Christ, Sandy Welling-Miller, Call
Committee Communicator
S.O.A.R. Movie Night will be held Thursday, August
20, at 7 p.m. We enjoyed July's movie "Facing the
Giants" so much, that this month we will be viewing
"Flywheel" by the same producers. The movie tells the
story of Jay Austin, a used car dealer who will do
whatever it takes to sell a car, even if it means promising
more than he can deliver. His manipulative ways permeate
all of his relationships to the point even his wife and son
distrust him. When Jay restores a classic convertible,
God begins working in his life. As he faces the reality of
how he conducts his business, he sees how integrity and
repentance can change everything. Join us for discussion
and fellowship. Bring a snack! Bring a friend!
Men's Breakfast will meet on August 22 at Panera
Bread on Rt. 20 from 7:30-9:00 a.m.
Next Sunday, August 23 at 2:00 p.m. Living History
Day Event at Oak Grove Cemetery located inside the
campus of Bowling Green State University. Come and learn
about the life of Pastor John Born, who served as the
pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stony Ridge, Ohio
from 1887 to 1933 (46 years). Pastor Born was born in
Prussia in 1863. He immigrated to America with his family
in 1865. In 1888, he married Elizabeth and they had a
daughter, Margaret. In 1887, Pastor Born graduated from
seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained on July
24, 1887, and served as the pastor of St. John’s until his
death in 1933. He is buried in Ft. Meigs Cemetery in
Perrysburg, Ohio. Pastor John Born will be portrayed by
our own Pastor Daniel G. Beaudoin. *Due to National Tractor Pull
traffic, we recommend entering the cemetery from Poe Road, turn south
on Willard, right on Merry, then left to enter the cemetery.
Our church parking lots will be
CLOSED
Monday, Aug. 17 & Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The entire parking lot will be sealed and striped
on those two days, so no vehicles will be allowed
on the property on August 17 & 18. The Church
Office and Dayschool will also be closed. We will
return to the offices on Wednesday.
Lutheran World Relief has issued an urgent plea for
School Kits. They have received more requests than they
can fill. Shared Bounty has provided school supplies for
needy children in our area. Now we are being asked to
provide school supplies for needy children around the
world. One teacher in Nicaragua said that some of her
students cannot even afford a pencil and yet they are
eager to come to class every day.
You can help children continue learning despite the
hardships they face by donating any of the following:
 70-sheet notebooks (280-300 sheets total) of wide or
college-ruled paper approximately 8”x10 1/2”
 30-centimeter ruler or a ruler with centimeters on one
side and inches on the other
 Pencil sharpener
 Blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel
blades work well)
 Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers
 Black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink)
 Box of 16 or 24 crayons
 2 ½” eraser
There is a box in the coatroom for these items. The
ladies have made 20 drawstring backpack-style cloth bags
which they hope to fill with your help.
St. John’s will host a nine-week session of Financial Peace
University this fall. A FREE preview will be held on
Sunday, September 13, at 6:30 pm. Classes will begin
on Sunday, September 27, from 6:30 to 8 pm. Child
care will be available. The cost of the class is $93. For
more info or to register, contact the church office or visit

Baby Care Kits ~ In the fall of 2014, our WELCA
group included 20 baby care kits with their shipment of
handmade comforters to Lutheran World Relief. Each
baby care kit has the bare necessities to care for a baby.
We will need to collect quite a few items if we want to
assemble a number of kits again for the Fall of 2015.
There is a box in the coatroom for anyone who would
like to contribute items for this worthy cause.
The following items should be included in a Baby Care Kit:
●Two lightweight cotton t-shirts (no onesies, please).
●Two long- or shirt-sleeved gowns, sleepers (without
feet), or pajama tops and pants (without feet). Note:
As the baby's legs grow, the item can be worn for a
longer period of time if it doesn't have attached feet.
●One receiving blanket.
●One larger blanket (up to 52" square) can be crocheted,
knitted, a comforter, crib-size blanket, etc.
●Four cloth diapers, flat fold preferred.
●One jacket, sweater or sweatshirt with a hood, or include
a baby cap.
●Two pairs of socks.
●One hand towel, dark color recommended.
●Two bath-size bars of gentle soap, in original wrapping.
●Two diaper pins, or large safety pins.
Per Lutheran World Relief, do not add other items not
on the above list. The kits are designed to be acceptable
and useful in cultures and climates different from ours.
Gently used, clean items (no stains or tears) can be
substituted for new ones. TIP: Sizes 6 - 24 months may
be used. Varying the sizes of the clothing items included
will make the baby care kits useful as baby grows.
