OpenADR
 What is OpenADR?
 OpenADR is a high level computer to computer
communication protocol which was a product of the Smart
Grid initiative
 A way for utility suppliers to automatically and securely
communicate with their customers’ building systems to reduce
peak demand.
OpenADR
 Why would a customer want to implement OpenADR?
 The primary reason is to reduce cost.
 Utility companies are willing to incentivize their customers to
reduce the peak demand.
 Title 24 requires controls and equipment to be OpenADR
“compatible”.
How does demand response impact
you?
 You control that.

 Considerations when designing a new building.
 Life Cycle philosophy
 Cost over the life of the building (training, simplicity, continuous
commissioning, energy savings)

Open Systems
 Two primary protocols
BACnet
LON
 Certification process for both systems.
ASHRAE, LonMark International.
Integration to many other protocols
BACnet
 BACnet is a communications protocol for building automation
and control networks. It is an ASHRAE, ANSI, and ISO standard
protocol.
 BACnet was designed to allow communication of building automation
and control systems for applications such as heating, ventilating, and airconditioning control, lighting control, access control, and fire detection
systems and their associated equipment. The BACnet protocol provides
mechanisms for computerized building automation devices to exchange
information, regardless of the particular building service they perform.
Proper communication between building automation devices is critical
for maximizing building energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and other
aspects of "green" buildings. ASHRAE Standard 135)
LON
 LonMark / LonWorks is an open protocol developed by
Echelon Corporation.
 LonMark was conceived as a general purpose real-time
control technology. Which would enable “plug & play”
interoperability and a single tool set. LonMark products can
be found in all of the major building system categories as
with BACnet.
 Every LON device has a neuron chip manufactured by
Echelon Corp.
 LonMark is the certifying agency that certifies the product
adheres to the LonMark standards.
BMS & Energy
 How does BMS impact Energy Initiatives
 BMS should play a major role in energy strategy
 Modern BMS is the easiest way to implement initiatives.
 Scheduling, retro-commissioning, continuous commissioning,
Optimization, Demand Ventilation
 Dependent on systems controlled
 HVAC
 Lighting
 Plug Load
